Rail is one of the safest forms of transport — and yet thousands of people are still killed or injured on the world's tracks each year. Most of those incidents are predictable. How we arrive at 4,500 lives a year
Global rail safety bodies record between 8,000 and 10,000 rail-related fatalities each year across passenger, freight, and level-crossing incidents. Independent reviews suggest that a meaningful share of those deaths are preventable with better forecasting of route-level risk — particularly weather exposure, track-condition decay, and terrain-driven derailment risk.
Modelled against a conservative 45–50% preventability rate on high-confidence risk categories, full global adoption of TrainSafe is projected to prevent up to 4,500 fatalities per year. In its first year of deployment, focused on early-adopter networks in Australia, the UK, and parts of the EU, TrainSafe is expected to save approximately 600 lives.

Disclaimer & assumptions
The 600 and 4,500 lives-saved figures are internal projections produced by TrainSafe for illustrative purposes. They are not independently audited, peer-reviewed, or endorsed by any rail regulator or safety body.
- Baseline: 8,000–10,000 rail-related fatalities per year, drawn from publicly reported figures by the UIC, EU Agency for Railways, and FRA.
- Preventability rate: we assume 45–50% of fatalities in high-confidence risk categories (weather exposure, track-condition decay, terrain-driven derailment) are addressable with better forecasting.
- Global rollout (4,500): assumes TrainSafe is adopted across the majority of the world's major passenger and freight networks, with operators acting on high-risk alerts.
- Year one (600): assumes early-adopter deployment limited to networks in Australia, the UK, and parts of the EU, covering roughly 13–15% of the addressable global rail volume.
- Out of scope: suicides, trespass on tracks outside monitored corridors, and incidents driven purely by human error unrelated to route conditions are not included in the preventable baseline.
Actual outcomes will vary based on adoption rate, operator response to alerts, data quality, and factors outside TrainSafe's control. These numbers should not be relied upon for investment, regulatory, or operational decisions without independent validation.
